Prioritizing Mental Health at Work: World Mental Health Day at Blackman & Sloop

Prioritizing Mental Health at Work: World Mental Health Day at Blackman & Sloop

Each October, World Mental Health Day serves as an important reminder of the value of mental well-being in both our personal and professional lives. At Blackman & Sloop, we recognize that supporting mental health is essential not only for individual success but also for fostering a strong, connected workplace where people can thrive.

This year, we marked the occasion by dedicating the week to activities designed to recharge, connect, and highlight the importance of caring for ourselves and one another.

Jen Lewis shared how timely this reminder felt:

“Do you think they purposely schedule mental health week when CPAs are all crazy busy?” she joked. “With the 10/15 deadline and our audit group being so busy, we all needed these reminders and check-ins!”

Why Mental Health Matters in the Workplace

The nature of our profession often comes with tight deadlines, complex problem-solving, and high expectations. In such an environment, it can be easy to overlook self-care. Yet, research consistently shows that mental health is directly tied to focus, resilience, and long-term productivity.

At Blackman & Sloop, we believe in creating a culture where mental health is valued and supported. This includes not only making resources available but also creating intentional opportunities for balance and connection in the workplace.

How We Recognized World Mental Health Day in 2025

Throughout the week leading up to World Mental Health Day, our team engaged in simple, uplifting activities to encourage wellness and connection:

  • Monday – Mood-Boosting Foods: We began the week by offering snacks known to promote well-being and lift spirits, setting a positive tone for the days ahead.
  • Tuesday – Group Walk: A mid-day walk gave our team the chance to step away from their desks, enjoy the fresh air, and connect with colleagues in a relaxed setting.
  • Wednesday – Comfort Food Breakfast: Wednesday started with a hearty breakfast featuring favorite comfort foods, providing energy and comfort.
  • Thursday – Hydration Station: Refreshing spa water and healthy snacks were available throughout the day to encourage hydration, focus, and sustained energy.
  • Friday – Mental Health Benefits Information: To close out the week, employees received information on the mental health resources included in our firm’s insurance plans, ensuring that support is always accessible when needed.

We also introduced an interactive “What Boosts Our Mental Health” Wall in the office kitchen. Team members contributed pictures, comments, and ideas about the practices, people, and activities that sustain their well-being. From family time to exercise and hobbies, the wall served as a powerful reminder that while self-care looks different for everyone, it is equally important for all.

Jennipher Branch loved the daily surprises this brought:

“It’s been a treat to see new pictures added every day and a new surprise mood booster in the kitchen.”

Reflections from the Team

The week provided many opportunities for personal reflection and meaningful connection.

For Derek Haenke, the experience encouraged thoughtful self-awareness:

“It’s nice to reflect on what things help put us in a good space and what resources are available to support mental health,” he said. “The Mental Health Wall really stood out to me. It’s nice to see all of the positivity others get and where they find that positivity.”

When it comes to recharging, Derek shared that staying active is key:

“I like to exercise or play golf—it helps me disconnect from challenges I may be facing.”
“I also added ‘hugs when I get home’ to the wall,” he added. “When I reflect on that feeling, it’s what helps level my mind and body when it’s racing.”

Cristina Scamardella appreciated the reminder to slow down:

“I love taking a break to think about mental health. When we get used to running around and working hard, we forget to take some time to breathe,” she said.
“The wall of things that boost your mental health was my favorite part—having visual reminders of what makes us happy is both beneficial and fun.”
“For me, walking is a great way to recharge, and my posts were inspired by two things that bring me happiness—friends and family.”

Laura Bennett also found the week to be a meaningful opportunity to focus on what matters most:

“One wellness habit that I always go to—especially during my busier times—is getting my workouts in each week,” she shared. “They help me maintain a healthy mental space and recharge by staying active and spending time with my workout coach.”
“After a long day or week, what truly recharges me is spending time with my husband and boys—whether we’re doing something fun or simply relaxing together. My family grounds me and brings me joy every day.”

Laura also contributed a personal touch to the Mental Health Wall:

“I placed a picture of my husband and two boys from our trip to the Tennessee mountains last year. That time was so relaxing—it reminds me that my mental safety net is my family.”

Continuing the Commitment

World Mental Health Day may only come once a year, but our commitment to supporting employee well-being is ongoing. By fostering an environment where individuals feel cared for and encouraged to prioritize their health, we hope to build not only a more successful workplace but also a more balanced and supportive one.

At Blackman & Sloop, we believe that true success is measured not only by professional achievements but also by the health and happiness of our people.
