17 Jul How to Get the Most Out of Your Internship: Mid-Summer Reflections from Our Interns
Internships are more than a foot in the door — they’re a launchpad for your career! At Blackman & Sloop, we see each internship season as a two-way opportunity: for students to gain firsthand experience in public accounting and for our firm to build relationships with the next generation of professionals. As we reach the midpoint of our summer internship program, we asked current interns, past interns, and team mentors to reflect on how to make the most of this experience.
Whether you’re halfway through your internship or starting to explore opportunities, their insights offer practical tips and fresh perspectives on how to grow, connect, and thrive.
From Intern to Full-Time: Advice from a Former Intern
Logan Miller-DeBrosky, now a CAAS Senior Associate, began her career at Blackman & Sloop as an intern, an experience that set the stage for a smooth transition into a full-time role. We asked Logan how she made the most of her internship and positioned herself for long-term success:
“I got the most out of my internship by asking questions and getting involved. If I didn’t have work to do, I’d reach out and ask for something new or shadow someone to learn more.”
Some of the things Logan did early on that helped her succeed:
- Attended firm events like the Christmas party to build connections in a casual setting
- Researched the firm and learned about the partners
- Built strong relationships by asking coworkers about their families, hobbies, and weekends — not just about work
How did her internship with Blackman & Sloop prepare her for her current role?
“When I started full time, I already knew the people, the processes, and the software. It made the transition smooth because I was already comfortable with the firm’s expectations.”
Her advice to current interns:
“Be curious. Ask questions. Keep an open mind and absorb as much as you can. Remember, the internship is just as much a trial for the employer as it is for you.”
How It’s Going: Reflections from This Summer’s Interns
Yaritza Ventura, a current summer intern, has been pleasantly surprised by the flexibility and balance offered at Blackman & Sloop.
“I love that we get a taste of the hybrid work environment as interns. It’s helped me understand what I want in a future workplace.”
One of Yaritza’s standout moments so far has been a presentation she created exploring a potential new niche for the CAAS department — a reminder that internship projects can go beyond learning, they can add real value to the team! She emphasizes the value of:
- Staying organized with daily to-do lists
- Making time to attend events and volunteer opportunities
- Getting out of your comfort zone to build relationships
Her biggest takeaway so far?
“Get comfortable being uncomfortable. That’s where the learning happens!”
Megan Helgesen, another Blackman & Sloop summer intern, echoed the value of being hands-on and fully present during an internship.
“We’re not just observing — we’re doing. From mock tax returns to niche research projects, I’ve learned so much by being directly involved.”
Her strategies for success include:
- Taking handwritten notes after trainings to boost retention
- Protecting work-life balance by keeping her email and Teams apps off of her phone
- Slowing down and giving herself grace as she adjusts to the in-office rhythm
Her biggest insight?
“No one’s path is linear. Talking to professionals here has shown me there are so many ways to have a successful accounting career.”
Advice for Future Interns
If you’re just starting out, here’s what our team wants you to know:
- Be present. Take notes. Ask questions. Get involved.
- Be yourself. You were selected for a reason.
- Build connections. Some of your best insights come from casual conversations.
- Try new things. The more you explore, the more you learn about what you like, and what you don’t.
- Take care of yourself. Rest well, eat well, and don’t be afraid to slow down.
At Blackman & Sloop, we’re proud of the growth, initiative, and collaboration we’ve seen from this year’s interns. No matter where your path leads next, the lessons learned during your internship will shape your career for years to come.
